After a final pitch on Indiegogo the sci-fi, action-thriller ‘Monsters of Man’ was released in December 2020. Australian director Mark Toia made use of the Kulen jungle scenery and the impressive Poeng Ta Kho cliff in the Dangrek Mountain range, just 50km north of Siem Reap, for many of the shots during principal photography in 2016. Some temples of the Angkor Park, a cave system in Kampot province and grimy city scenes in Phnom Penh can also be seen in the movie.
While the film itself might just be average action-fare, locals, expats & future visitors to Cambodia will surely enjoy the action-packed ride. Cambodian actors Ma Rynet, Trong Kam and Ly Ty star next to an international cast, including award-winning American actor Neal McDonough. ‘Monsters of Man‘ was shot on Red cameras, edited in Final Cut Pro and is available to stream on all major platforms. You can learn more about the movie’s creation on the 10th episode of Newsshooter Weekly, with Matt Allard ACS and Erik Naso interviewing Director/DoP Mark Toia.
““The cost savings in accommodation, food and local crew wages made it very appealing for us to look at Cambodia seriously. We could not have shot it in Australia at all with our budget, so we had to look at other countries. We did investigate Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam but once we scouted the large cave systems, villages and temples in Cambodia, I was sold.” (Director Mark Toai, Interview in the Phnom Penh Post, 30/09/2020)
