“I feel this kind of film needs an audience. I wanted to educate people, I wanted to do this for Cambodia. I didn’t want it to be that small thing that disappeared.” (Angelina Jolie)
‘First They Killed My Father’ is a Cambodian–American Khmer language drama directed by Angelina Jolie and co-produced by Jolie with Cambodian filmmaker and producer Rithy Panh for release on Netflix. It is based on the memoir of the same name by Loung Ung and set in the Khmer Rouge era of the mid ’70s, depicting the stuggles of a five-year-old Ung during that period.
The movie is the biggest film ever produced locally with a supposed budget of $22 million USD and it was Cambodia’s Oscar entry for the Best Foreign-Language film that year. Neflix also released a short featurette on YouTube.
