On their second Expedition X episode the TV hosts travel to Kulen Mountain near Siem Reap in search for ‘Cambodia’s Jungle Monster‘. Originally aired in 2020 on Discovery Channel, a team of explorers consisting of Phil Torres, Jessica Chobot and host Josh Gates, travel to the tropical jungles of the Kulen mountain range in search for any proof or sightings of the supposed existence of ‘Tek Tek’, known in North America as ‘Bigfoot’.
The surge of human activity surrounding the discovery of an ancient city sends Phil Torres and Jessica Chobot deep in the Cambodian jungle to search for a monster that has been terrifying locals for centuries.
Lonely Planet guidebook author, location scout and local production manager Nick Ray together with expat biologist Dr. Greg McCann, which I personally spoke with about his trips and experiences in Virachey Park, join the crew for this episode. After a short visit to the temples of Angkor Wat, the hosts depart on helicopter to their base at Kulen Mountain, where they will spend the next few days looking for any signs of ‘Tek Tek’. The team will travel on bamboo rafts along a jungle creek, check camera traps, get soaked in a heavy rainstorm and discover ancient temple ruins along the way.
The spectacular scenery of the ‘Poeng Ta Kho’ cliff and tourist attraction gets featured significantly in this episode, which makes the Kulen wilderness seem much more remote, as it actually is. Much of the main sites in the Kulen Park can be visited by tourists on a long day-trip from Siem Reap, or best on a multi-day journey with a stay in a nearby village at the base of the mountain range.
Another recent movie that made great use of the natural beauty of the Kulen jungle is Mark Toai’s Sci-Fi flick ‘Monsters of Man’ (2020). You can read more about the action-thriller on our blog post here.
Over the years many TV personalities filmed episodes in Cambodia, such as extreme angler and explorer Jeremy Wade, celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay for ‘Gordon’s Great Escape‘ and late Anthony Bourdain for his Emmy Award winning ‘Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations’ food & travel series. Cambodia still has many great photogenic locations, friendly people and unique experiences to offer for crews that are willing to go a bit off the beaten path and are willing to compromise on some aspects of the production and local skill-sets.
